Three Helpful Tips To Prepare Your Home Plumbing For The Winter
Tuesday, January 28th, 2020
Winter can be a wonderful time of year considering that winter also happens to fall in line with most of our favorite holidays. This is the time of the year that most of us will have friends and family over for get-togethers, gift exchanges, or holiday parties. You want your home to be able to handle these events when they happen and make lasting memories. You do not want to be spending these winter months needing emergency plumbing services in Annapolis, MD when the problem could have easily been avoided by checking out and following our list of tips below to help make sure you properly winterize your home.
Turn Off Outdoor Faucets
- Your outside faucets can freeze if the water is left inside of them, and we all know what happens when water freezes. It will expand and can crack or burst pipes. It is important to go inside your home and turn off these faucets before the temperature drops to freezing. After you turn off the faucet from the inside, make sure to go back outside and drain the water that may be remaining in the pipe to the outside.
Heat Cable & Insulation Installation
- If you have any exposed pipes inside your home, that will mean that these pipes are subject to freezing. It’s important to make sure that these pipes do not freeze, as that risks them bursting inside your home and causing damage. You can have heat cable installed along these pipes that will help prevent the exposed pipes from freezing. If heat cable is not an option, then old fashioned insulation will do the trick as well. If you want to be extra secure than it will not hurt to install both heat cable and insulation.
Garage Door Insulation
- Next time that you are in your garage, check around and look for any exposed plumbing that may be in there. If so, then you are again taking the risk that these pipes will freeze, burst, and cause damage to anything that is in your garage. An inexpensive and good way to make sure that plumbing inside your garage is safe from the winter weather is to insulate your garage door. Insulating your garage door will not only keep any exposed pipes in your garage from freezing, but it will also help lower your heating bill during the cold winter months.
