5 Fall Tips That You Should Do Before The Fall Begins

Friday, September 27th, 2019

What a summer this year was, not too many thunderstorms, but plenty of beautiful sunny days to go to the beach and activities outside. However, we are now in September, and just like every other year, summer is just about over, and the temperatures are beginning to drop. With this drop in temperature, there are a few things that you need to do before the temperatures get to a freezing point. We have made a simple and easy-to-do list for you to do at your home before those temperatures drop and cause damage to your home.

Gutter Cleaning

  • Along with summer ending and the temperatures dropping, leaves will also begin to fall from the tree’s, and into your gutter system. You always want to keep your gutter’s clear, however, it is extra important to clean the leaves and debris out of them before freezing temperatures as your gutters will not work properly is there are frozen leaves and debris clogging your gutters.

Holiday Travel

  • If you do not host the holidays at your home and instead travel to your relatives home and are gone for prolonged periods of time during the wintertime, then it will be a great idea to go ahead and turn off your water while you are gone. This will help prevent any water lines freezing, and continuous water flows into your home in case of an accident.

Check The Water Heater

  • During the fall and winter months, your water heater will be forced to work a little bit harder give you that hot water shower you need after a hard day’s work. This being said, head on over to your hot water heater, check for any slow leaks of course and make sure it is set to 120 degrees to make sure that your water heater will perform at a peak level during the winter months.

Put Away Your Garden Hose

  • If you have your garden hose on a hose rack out front or in the back yard, you will want to make sure to store it inside a shed or the garage during the winter months to help make sure that your hose does not get damaged in the winter weather. Water can get trapped inside your hose if left outside and will freeze very quickly in cold temperatures causing damage to your hose.

Cover Your Outdoor Faucets

  • Make sure that your outdoor faucets are insulated to prevent them from freezing and bursting the pipes inside your home. If you do not have a shut-off valve for each outdoor faucet, then you may want to cover your outdoor faucets in styrofoam as this is very inexpensive and will work as insulation to keep your faucet and pipes from freezing.
