Winter Plumbing Tips

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

Winter can be brutal on your home’s plumbing system. You need to be prepared when the temperatures begin to drop. Water can freeze in your pipes causing them to burst from the inside out. Here’s a checklist to help you get prepared for the winter season to come.

Plumbing Leaks

Small leaks can turn into big problems when temperatures fall below freezing. Don’t wait until the last minute to check your pipes. You should check all exposed pipes – both indoor and outdoor. Even if your pipes are insulated, you still need to check for moisture. If you find moisture in the insulation, there may be hidden leaks in your plumbing. Stopping the leaks will save the pipes and save you money.

Pipe Insulation

Making sure that your exposed pipes are insulated is another preventive measure that you can take to protect your plumbing against freezing weather. Exposed pipes are located in:

  • Crawl spaces
  • Attics
  • Garages
  • Basements
  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens

Exposed pipes need to be wrapped with plumbing insulation foam. Pipe wrap insulation is inexpensive and easy to install. It will help to save on your heating costs and keeps the warm air in the house.

Outdoor Spigots and Faucets

Beginning September through the end of October is a good time to remove any garden hoses that are connected to outdoor spigots or faucets. The last thing you want is to have any remaining water in the hose freeze. If water trapped in a hose freezes, it can damage your plumbing. If you have a shut-off valve, (usually located in the basement) just turn the water to the spigot or faucet off. If not, simply drain the water from the spigot and cover it with a hose bib cover that you can purchase from a local home improvement store.

Know Your Water Main Location

Last but not least, everyone should know where the water main in the home is located. If there is ever an emergency such as a busted pipe, you will need to be able to shut off the water to minimize or stop further damage to your home.
