Does Your Water Heater Need Maintenance?

Thursday, November 20th, 2014

The cold weather is upon us in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.  Most people will only call a plumber about their water heater if it is need of repair. Water heater maintenance is something that many homeowners tend to neglect. However, neglecting water heater maintenance can result in many problems. If your water heater does not receive regular maintenance, then it will be more likely to break down and may not last as long.

Most water heaters are not maintenance free and will after time, have sediment buildup, causing your hot water to give off an odd smell and taste. Neglecting water heater maintenance can also be dangerous. For example, if sediment builds up inside of the tank, then the pressure relief valve may fail. Your home may flood if this occurs. Although very rare, your water heater can potentially explode from a failed valve.

Your water heater will last much longer if it receives maintenance. A water heater is a big investment, so you want to make sure that it lasts as long as it can. Your water heater should receive maintenance at least once a year to be flushed and to have the pressure valve checked.

Water Heater maintenance should only be performed by a certified, licensed, and insured plumbing contractor.  Guardian Plumbing has 30 years of experience in performing water heater maintenance and repair.
